Wayne grew up in New Mexico and still visits there to see family. He attended Sterling College in Sterling, Kansas where he met his wife Lynette. He has his bachelor’s degree from Sterling, Masters of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary.
Wayne has been a pastor at St. James Presbyterian in Littleton, Colorado and First Presbyterian in Brainerd, Minnesota. At both Colorado and Minnesota, Wayne was involved with the college and youth. Wayne didn’t want to be a pastor, but was asked to be an intern for the youth program in Colorado. He loved it so much that he felt called to be involved with youth. Wayne’s dream was to have the largest youth program in Denver. When he left Colorado, his vision expanded to have the largest youth program in a small community.
Wayne has been a pastor at Kirk of the Hills since 1989. He has enjoyed directing the Kirk mission program. His Doctor of Ministry final paper is entitled: “Acts 1:8 in Reverse: A Strategy of Renewing the Church Through Short-term Missions.” When Wayne arrived in 1989, Kirk of the Hills wasn’t involved in missions as much as Wayne had envisioned. Since 1990, we have sent out short-term and long-term teams. Hundreds of people at the Kirk have had their lives changed in powerful ways through Christ as they have experienced other cultures. Today 24% of the Kirk’s budget goes towards mission due to the passion and vision that Wayne has had and continue to have for missions.
Wayne is married to Lynette, who is a librarian at Helmrich Library. They have been married since 1979. Lynette teaches our WOW Bible study every Monday during the school year. WOW is “Women of Worth” that reaches over 250 women from around the community. Many would say that Wayne and Lynette share the same skill as passionate and gifted teachers. Their oldest son David is a recent graduate from Bethel University and is working in Minnesota. Their younger son Jonathan is active in the Kirk’s special needs ministry and attends Jenks High School.
Wayne enjoys running and keeping fit. He loves being in the mountains of Colorado hiking or downhill skiing. Wayne is an avid sports fan and loves college football and basketball plus professional tennis. Wayne and Lynette both love to travel and their favorite place is Mountain View, AR.
Wayne has always had a vision for the future. It started with missions at the Kirk and now has moved to small groups. Small groups are groups of 10-12 people that build community. They provide support for one another, but also grow in their faith together. Kirk of the Hills recently became a “church of small groups,” where we believe the best way to know one another is through groups. This is Wayne’s vision because he believes that God’s sovereign plan is through your walk with Christ. In groups, we are called to know Christ and deepen our Christian walk with him.
