Tom Gray came to Kirk of the Hills in 1982, having earlier served churches in Monrovia, California and Edinburgh, Scotland. His undergraduate work was in music performance (organ and choral conducting) and he first worked as a choir director and organist. His first job as organist began at age 8. He began conducting choirs at age 15. Tom grew up in California and most of his family still lives there.
Tom attended seminary at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, in the same class as Co-pastor, Wayne Hardy. Tom’s calling to the Lord was in 1973 when he lost one of his brother’s. He reflected on his brother’s life and the Lord. A group of pastors thought that Tom was very qualified to be a pastor. He holds a doctorate in communications and an honorary doctorate of divinity. Tom’s favorite book in the Bible is Philippians.
Tom is married to Chrissie, who is a professor of English at Oral Roberts University. Tom and Chrissie have been married since 1968 where they meet in their church. Their daughter, Audrey, is married to Paul Stanton. Audrey recently graduated from medical school and now is an Emergency Room physician at OSU Medical Center. Their daughter, Emily, is Tom's favorite granddaughter.
Tom is an avid amateur astronomer. He has an observatory in the attic of his home and plans to do some serious science by using his computerized systems to search for extragalactic supernovae and for star systems with planets. Chrissie and Tom have traveled all over the world trying to see an eclipse. They got their chance in March 2006 off the coast of Greece where they saw one. His favorite places that he has traveled are Iceland and Croatia. He has never been to Australia or Antarctica. He hopes to go to both one day.
Tom also reads almost anything he can get his hands on. Together, he and Chrissie, have over 10,000 books and have read most of them. Tom loves to read novels and “how to” books. He realizes he can’t do everything, but loves to read how to do it all. If he could, he would love to learn more about welding, how to drive an 18-wheeler and more information on police work.
